Pure
Organic Selenium with Fermentation Solubles
O.S.Y. 200X is a spray dried whole
cell yeast of saccharomyces cerevisiae containing controlled high levels
of selenium. The
natural yeast fermentation process is than supplemented with the necessary
levels of chromium and selenium. The yeast cream is than pasteurized to
prevent contamination and spray dried and than combined with our
lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation solubles for the highest quality
product of its kind.
This process allows the selenium to interact with the yeast cell
components and the processing conditions cause a natural chelating effect
which preserve the level of biological selenium as natural
selenomethionine.
Recent research work does not question the well known need for Se,
rather the form in which should be fed. Results of recent experiments
illustrate the value of providing dietary Se in an organic form. Selenium
has been shown to be important in reducing problems associated with tying
up, poor performance and nervousness. There is also a link in its ability
to limit free radical damage. Many factors lead to deficiencies of this
nutrient. The most common cause is geographical areas consisting of soils,
which are deficient in selenium. Horses that are exposed to heavy
conditioning, fast growth and pollution can benefit from the
supplementation of organic selenium.
Numerous University research studies
have clearly and effectively demonstrated increased retention of Se, when
fed in the form of Se yeast. Researchers have said that the fundamental
error had originally been made with the choice of sodium selenite. Sodium
selenite is not only a carcinogen, but acts as an oxidant.
Numerous
University research studies have clearly and effectively demonstrated
the benefits in supplementing chromium in animal diets. Some of the
benefits are listed below in order to objectively evaluate the need for
adding chromium to existing high quality diets.
Selenium is a known anti oxidant and is an essential component of
Glutathione
peroxidase enzyme, which inactivates free radicals.
Selenium is required in thyroid metabolism while converting
active thyroid hormone (14) into the inactive thyroid hormone (13).
lnactivates heavy metals, especially mercury, lead and cadmium.
Selenium Yeast is reported to protect against radiation damage,
even it given after exposure.
Evaluations of toxicity of different forms of selenium have shown
that high Selenium Yeast is less toxic than inorganic forms of selenium
such as sodium selenate and selenite.
A study with
rats showed that high doses (1.5 and 3.0 mg/kg body weight) of organic
selenium in Selenium Yeast did not have any toxic effects after 14 days.
This level of selenium is much higher than the theoretical toxic level for
inorganic selenium (Leiras, internal report).
A
comparison of the toxicity of a selenite and a Selenium Yeast diet
in rats showed that Selenium Yeast was much less toxic (Spallholz and
Raftery 1987). No hepatotoxicity, cardiotoxicity or splenomegaly to 16 ppm
dietary Se was observed in rats fed high Selenium Yeast over an 8 week
period. Animals fed selenite at the same level showed signs of various
toxicities.

polynicotinate) and selenium as natural selenomethionine.
The report by Pagan et at. (1995) of
a positive response to organic Cr
supplementation in exercising Thoroughbred horses is exciting. Using a
switchback design in which the horses received 5 mg/day of Cr from Cr
yeast, benefits were observed in metabolic response during periods of
strenuous exercise on a high-speed treadmill. During the exercise period,
Cr supplementation reduced plasma glucose, plasma lactate, plasma cortisol
and elevated plasma triglycerides.

Organic
Yeast Polynicotinate chromium is also more bioavailable than chromium
picolinate.
Animal research study at the University of California found that
polynicotinate chromium was absorbed and retained up to 311% better than
chromium picolinate and 672% better than chromium chloride. The high
bioavailability means that polynicotinate chromium has the ability to
deliver more of the healthy benefits chromium has to offer.
Schwarz
and Mertz in 1959 were the first to identify chromium as the active
constituent of the glucose tolerance factor (GTF). Although the exact
structure of GTF is unknown, it is thought to be a nicotinic
acid-trivalent chromium-nicotinic acid axis with ligands of glutamic acid,
glycine and cysteine (Mertz et al., 1974). Chromium may have several
biological functions, including activating certain enzymes and maintaining
structural integrity of nucleic acids, but its main role is as the key
component of the GTF which enhances the action of insulin summary, there
is a growing body of evidence which suggest that chromium may be an
essential trace element for livestock and poultry. The nutritional
requirement for chromium may vary with different specie and physiological
state within a specie.
